In 1991 Trumpter/Composer Malachi Thompson created Africa Brass out of the tradition of the old New Orleans brass bands. This is no repertory ensemble, but a musical extention of the spirit/energy that ended one era and began another.
Thompson has had plenty of experience working with brass. He was an original member of Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy and part of the New York Hot Trumpet Repertory Company, a group that featured Ola Dara, Stanton Davis, Lester Bowie and Wynton Marsalis. Thompson co-led Brass Proud from 1975-80 with trumpeter Norman Spiller, a band that featured four to eight trumpets.
Buddy Bolden's Rag takes you on a musical tour of the jazz landscape that quantum leaps between styles and eras. Howard Reich, writing for the Chicago Tribune described Thompson and Africa Brass accurately when he wrote, "Many jazz artists attempt to fuse past, present and future, but few have done so as eloquently...Thompson explores historic and ancient sources of jazz while looking boldly to its future."
